Letter from the Chancellor

Dear Families,

 

Our first priority is keeping students and staff safe. Yesterday there was an act of terror in lower Manhattan. This is a tragedy of the greatest magnitude and together as a City we mourn the loss of innocent New Yorkers.

 

The NYPD and FBI are conducting a thorough investigation. Today, the DOE will have additional guidance and trauma counselors available. Please contact your school’s principal for additional guidance and support.

 

During this tragedy, a school bus was hit and two students and two staff members were injured. Every precaution was taken to ensure the safety of our students and staff and we are closely monitoring that situation.

 

We are grateful to the first responders who acted swiftly to secure school buildings in close proximity to the incident and we are so appreciative for all that they do to keep New Yorkers safe.

Co-President Introduction: Amanda Rios and Annette Rodriguez

Discussed:

• Website purpose to communicate with parents, any entry changes should be reported to Dean Kathleen Sancimino. It was requested to add lunch menu to website.
• Agenda items: Treasury report, Present PA Fund balance, current PA Executive Board members
• Last year’s sweatshirt fundraiser but looking for new ideas: such as Box Top collection

• The role of the PA meeting: meet once a month for an hour or more to voice concerns
• It was suggested meeting in the morning to accommodate some parents
• Brief discussion of SLT purpose and means of meeting school goals and standards

• Encouraged Parents to discuss with Students important extra-curricular activity opportunities at the school that can no longer be provide due to lack of participation
• College Awareness: encouraged to start looking and visiting Colleges now to be prepared

Principal Introduction:

• Mentioned upcoming Parent Teacher Conference on November 2nd and 3rd
• Discussed the importance of Pupil path Access
• Explained the marking period grade vs the semester grade on student transcript
• Upcoming LOMA Events: Halloween Party on 10/26, Thanksgiving Feast: November 21^st
• Open House Event for incoming students: November 16th

 

Current Parent Events:

• United Federation of Teachers (UFT) are having a Parent event Saturday, 10/21, 8am to 4pm

• Transcript Day: Tuesday, October 24^th, 6 to 8pm Mrs. Cordero and Ms. Dowridge will be hosting a transcript day for parents and students to know their graduating qualifications

 

Universal Lunch Presentation: Tasfia Rahman-Community Food Advocates Fighting Poverty & Hunger In NYC

• Tasfia spoke about Universal free lunch for all students and encouraged Parents to tell students to take advantage of it. Currently working on making an effort to make lunches more appealing

	Hudson River Park's Fall 2017 Education Programs
	Start the school year with a dive into marine science at Hudson River Park! This fall, Hudson River Park's low-cost, high-impact field trips bring children to the water's edge to experience science and history through hands-on activities such as water chemistry experiments, fish dissections, historic vessel tours and nature-based games and activities.  We offer a wide range of field trip programs suitable for grades K-12.      To participate in our field trip programs, please fill out our online application. We look forward to seeing you and your class at Hudson River Park!      General Information Field trip season runs from September 12th-November 17th, weather permitting Available Tuesday - Friday Two time slots available per day: 10:30 am-12 pm & 12:30 pm-2:00 pm After School time slot: 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm Cost: $200 per program (fee waivers available upon demonstration of need) 30 students maximum; 1:10 chaperone ratio mandatory     Field Trip Programs Scheduled trips for schools and other groups     Junior Explorers (Grades K-1) Investigate park animals with scientific inquiry and nature-based crafts.   Garden Adventures (Grades 2-5)  Study birds in the Park and go on a scavenger hunt in the habitat garden.     Maritime Voyage (Grades 2-12)  Investigate NYC's rich waterfront history with artifacts and tour a historic vessel. Food Web Fun (Grades 2-5)  Use microscopes to examine live plankton and explore their important role in the food web.     Go Fish! (Grades 2-5)  An introduction to the Hudson River with catch and release fishing, touch tank discovery and a life cycle game.   Pollution Solutions (Grades 3-8)  Collect River samples to measure the health of the estuary and conduct experiments to learn about local waters.     Plankton Ecology (Grades 6-12)  Analyze river samples with a microscope to examine physical traits of plankton and design and test a plankton model.         Oysters & Water Quality (Grades 9-12)   Measure oysters to learn about their role in the estuary and test the River's chemical and physical properties.   Fish Biology (Grades 6-12)  Discuss fish biology and anatomy topics though a fish dissection and catch and release fishing.           REFER A FRIEND! Girls and Boys Bowling!

 

"The Boys and Girls Bowling team are looking for players for the Fall 2017 Season. No experience is needed to join the team. There are no-cuts. There is no cost to the student athlete. The PSAL covers the coast of games, practice etc.

The PSAL also covers transportation cost for students who need it. The Boys team Bowls at Astoria Lanes and the Girls Bowl at Whitestone lanes.

 

Students must have an up to date physical on the form below (see link below) from their doctor. Students that have turned in or will turn in health clinic consent forms can have their physicals done at the clinic in school.

 

Please note providing proof of a physical is not sufficient to play, sports physical form below is the physical that must completed by doctor.   Return completed forms to Trece Cordero in room 318
